WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure to remove excess fat deposits from specific areas of the body that are resistant to diet and exercise. Thin tubes called cannulas are inserted into the body, removing fat cells by suctioning them out.
Lipo can be performed on most body parts where there is fat accumulated, including the tummy and waist, hips and thighs, as well as in problem areas within the face (typically chin, and neck).
Liposuction improves body contour rather than significantly reduce weight, cellulite, or sagging skin which can be addressed by other procedures.
WHO BENEFITS THE MOST FROM FAT REMOVAL?
Generally, liposuction patients are men and women who are close to their ideal weight but have stubborn “pockets” of fat in specific areas such as the stomach or the chin. To add to its effectiveness, lipo can be combined with complementary procedures such as breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and mini facelift.
Dr. Rosso offers a free consultation to cosmetic patients deciding whether to get liposuction.
Many patients who come to see Dr. Rosso experience issues such as:
Post-pregnancy localized fat
Stubborn fat in areas that seem not to respond well to diet like the chin, neck and face.
Seeking to reduce the size of certain body parts
Hard to eliminate “beer belly”
Patients who work in industries where a high level of physical perfection is expected
Patients seek improvements in body contouring
WHAT TO EXPECT AND WHAT NOT TO EXPECT
Liposuction is year after year one of the top cosmetic surgery procedures in America.
It is a way to reshape the body in problem areas fighting fat accumulation in almost any part of the body: neck and chin, back and arms, tummy area, flanks and lower body. However, liposuction is not a substitute for diets and it does not cure cellulite or obesity.
Also, many people ask if the fat comes back. This article on SHAPE MAGAZINE explains why a lack of understanding of how liposuction works perpetuates this myth.
Small areas of liposuction are often done using local anesthesia whereas larger areas are typically performed under general anesthesia. The procedure does not require an overnight stay at a hospital unless a large amount of fat is being removed.
Some results of liposuction are immediately visible after surgery. Swelling and bruising are normal and take a few weeks to a few months to disappear entirely. Most patients see final results six months after surgery.
Dr. Rosso typically recommends his patients to take a week off from work. However, people who undergo a small amount of liposuction may just need a few days off. Like for many other surgical procedures, intense exercise or other strenuous activities should be avoided for three to four weeks.
After liposuction, Dr. Rosso advises his patients to use compression garments which are beneficial for decreasing the amount of bruising and swelling and help loose skin to retreat.
