It’s important for us to feel confident in our own skin. However, when we have issues with the way we look, our self-esteem tends to get affected. For some men, an enlarged chest can be the source of their insecurities.

If you happen to be suffering from this issue, then don’t worry. There is an answer to your problem.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition that makes men’s breast tissue get bigger. And, many male patients with gynecomastia would like to improve how their chest looks. As a result, men across the country try to find solutions to this issue, including plastic surgery.

By the time puberty strikes, some young boys see growth in their chest. There are instances when this development dissipates after puberty. However, there are cases when this enlargement remains. 60 to 90 percent of children and 50 to 60 percent of teenagers suffer from asymptomatic gynecomastia. Nearly 70 percent of men aged 50 to 69 also have this condition.

Gynecomastia is often caused by excess weight gain, puberty, hormones, substance use, and anabolic steroids. Some medications could also cause the enlargement of male breast tissue.

How Do I Know If I Have This Condition?

Most cases of gynecomastia affect both breasts, but there are instances of asymmetry. If you inspect yourself, you might notice a tender, disc-like mound of tissue that is quite firm to the touch. You should be able to find this mound around the nipple-areolar area.

In some cases, the mass can be hard and peripheral to the nipple. There may also be some discharge, changes to the skin, and enlarged lymph nodes. If you notice the latter rather than the former, you should get yourself checked for a cancerous mass. An early evaluation and diagnosis can help you address the issue immediately.

How Can Gynecomastia Be Corrected?

One of the best ways to correct gynecomastia is plastic surgery since it can effectively remove the lumps and excess fat from your chest. The process often involves liposuction and the removal of the extra glandular breast tissue. But, before the plastic surgeon conducts the procedure, they will examine your chest to confirm the diagnosis and determine the best treatment plan.

If you are on medication that could put you at risk of bleeding, you will be asked to stop taking them temporarily. It is also important to stop smoking and increase your consumption of nutritious food to speed up your recovery.

Plastic surgeons who perform this procedure often put the patients under general anesthesia. Drains are attached after the operation to prevent fluid from collecting in the area. To lessen the pain, control bruising, and avoid swelling, plastic surgeons may also suggest using a compression vest and icing the area.

Patients who have undergone gynecomastia surgery can start working again a week or so after the procedure. They can also begin doing strenuous activities around two to four weeks after the gynecomastia surgery depending on the patient.

Having enlarged breasts is nothing to be ashamed of. But if you do want to feel more confident about the way you look, you can choose to have your chest surgically corrected.
