Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases the size of the breast by placing implants beneath the breast tissue. The implants come in various shapes and sizes, and the procedure is usually performed as an outpatient surgery either at a hospital or a surgery center.

A surgical bra is placed after the procedure, and pain management is offered as needed. The recovery is usually quite comfortable, and patients can resume their normal activities within weeks.

Today, we will discuss how long you can expect the results to last. Here’s what you need to know:

What to Expect After Getting Breast Augmentation

The general idea behind breast augmentation is to increase the breast’s size without any changes to the breast. In other words, it’s essentially a cosmetic surgery that does not usually involve a significant change in the breast’s natural anatomy. The procedure is not expected to affect the breast’s aging process.

The average breast in a healthy woman experiences changes in firmness, size and shape as she ages, especially after menopause.

The impact of breast implants as a woman ages can be seen in two main areas: sagging and deflation.

As a woman ages, sagging is the most common factor you can encounter. This can often be corrected with a breast lift, and/or with new implants. In some cases, women can also notice deflation which can be due to sagging or, if it’s significant, it may be due to the fact that a breast implant has ruptured. In the latter case, it is medically advised to have a plastic surgeon remove the breast implant.

Durability and Lifespan of the Implant

The lifespan of breast implants is said to be 10 to 20 years, but this is not a set rule, in fact, breast implants can last much longer, even a lifetime.

Saline vs. Silicone Implants

Silicone and saline implants both come in various shapes and sizes. Patients can choose the shape and the size according to their preference. Many plastic surgeons recommend selecting the size that makes you look the most attractive and it fits your body shape.

While a silicone implant is often more popular, it is also more expensive.

How Long Do the Effects of Breast Augmentation Last?

As mentioned in the previous section, the breast augmentation procedure does not affect the breast’s natural aging process because as we age, our skin loses collagen and elasticity regardless of having implants or not.

When the breast tissue becomes older and weaker, the breast will naturally droop whether there is an implant or not. The difference in the breast’s shape as we age is a natural process, and most women expect it to occur. However, a bra can help support the breast and in many cases a breast lift corrects the sagging.

Most women choose to undergo breast augmentation because they want to enhance their breasts. However, they also want their breasts to remain firm, perky, and healthy.

The Bottom Line

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that enhances the breast’s size and shape. The results are expected to last for the rest of the woman’s life. If she is not satisfied with the results, she may need another augmentation procedure, a breast lift or an implant removal.
