How Breast Augmentation Affects Your Nipples

With more women opting for breast augmentation surgery than ever before, it’s important that potential patients understand what they are in for. For instance, one question that many women have before a breast augmentation surgery is related to the change in size and position of their nipples. Most women ponder “Do breast implants affect nipple sensitivity?” “Will my nipples look the same?” Well, here are a few ways in which breast augmentation can affect your nipples.

Will Your Nipples Look the Same as Before?

So before we start on how breast augmentation affects the nipples, let’s do some nomenclature. What most women refer to as the nipple is actually the areola. In fact, the nipple is the central projection coming out of the areola. Milk comes out of the nipple while breastfeeding. Additionally, the nipple also gets erect when a woman is feeling cold or stimulated.

A breast augmentation does not really affect the areolar complex and the nipple and you may not notice any significant change in the size or shape.

However, some women feel like their areolae are too large or asymmetrical. In such cases adding a breast lift to the procedure can help correct the issue. Therefore they can get a different nipples look after breast augmentation.

Reverse Inversions

Some women possess reverse or inverted nipples either from birth or as a result of some kind of trauma or injury. A nipples look after breast augmentation can end up being different as the Plastic Surgeon can rectify inverted nipples.

To engineer this change, the Plastic Surgeon usually makes an incision in the breast. Then, through the incision, he/she turns the nipple outward to improve appearance.

Of course, if you have inverted nipples , but you’re fine with your breast size, you can simply request your surgeon to rectify this inversion. You don’t need to get implants or making any other structural changes if you just want this procedure.

Breastfeeding After Breast Augmentation

Many women are concerned that after breast augmentation they may lose the ability to breastfeed. However it’s quite natural for women to continue breastfeeding even after this procedure without any complications.

More details on whether Breast Implants interfere with the connection between the nipples and the milk ducts can be found in one of our previous posts.

Generally, breast implants including silicone ones, do not interfere with breastfeeding.

Will You Lose Nipple Sensation?

Another issue most women wonder about is if their nipples lose sensitivity after the operation. They want to know if Breast Augmentation will lead to reduced satisfaction during stimulation and sexual intercourse.

It’s important to know that for a few weeks after the operation you will experience nipples’ numbness or tingling. This will happen as the nerves start to recover from the procedure. But remember that these effects are only temporary and will subside with time. In some cases it may take a few months for your body to restore complete nipple sensitivity. Eventually they will be as sensitive as before.

Stays in Position

Just like the size and shape of the areolar-nipple complex, the nipples’ position stays relatively the same even after breast augmentation. Of course, as with any recovery from Plastic Surgery, this will also take time. Yet the nipples look after Breast Augmentation in terms of position will stay the same.

In addition, immediately after surgery the nipples tend to sit a bit too high on the chest wall. This is quite natural. During breast augmentation recovery the nipples will drop and settle into a more natural position.

In many cases, the Plastic Surgeon may insert implants high on the chest wall. As a result, your nipples’ position will seem higher than it used to be. But this is quite common and temporary. Once your breast implants start to settle into place, the nipples will gradually return to their natural position.

Reduce Over-projecting Nipples

In some cases, the nipples tend to be a bit more pointy than normal over-projecting out of the breasts. This can make some women highly conscious of their appearance as the nipples tend to show even through their clothing. You can ask your Plastic Surgeon to include the procedure to correct this within your Breast Augmentation surgery.

Therefore, the nipples look after Breast Augmentation will be better. You will be able to wear every type of clothing without feeling self-conscious about it. This isn’t a very common procedure but it is often performed and patients can opt for it.
